Pressure Vacuum Breakers (PVB)

A pressure vacuum breaker, also called a vacuum breaker valve, is the most common backflow assembly for residential lawn irrigation. It guards against back-siphonage, not back-pressure, so it must be installed at least 12 inches above the highest sprinkler head or downstream outlet. Atmospheric vs pressure vacuum breaker: unlike an atmospheric vacuum breaker (AVB), a PVB is spring-loaded and can stay under continuous pressure, so it mounts upstream of your zone valves. Most are testable assemblies with two test cocks and shutoff valves; Febco and Apollo are the brands stocked here.

A PVB installs above grade, and the exposed brass body and test cocks are the first parts to crack in a freeze. Drain the assembly or wrap it in an insulated freeze bag before winter. Confirm the required type and annual-testing rule with your local water authority; our backflow buying guide compares PVB, RP, and double-check types.
