How to choose step and deck lights

Step lights put a low, shielded wash of light right where feet land - on stair treads, deck edges, and along low walls - for safe footing after dark without glare in the eyes. An eyelid or louvered face aims the light down at the surface.

Mount step lights into a riser, post, or wall face, and keep the source shielded so you light the tread, not the viewer. Low-voltage LED fixtures in cast aluminum stand up to weather and foot traffic. Run them off the same low-voltage transformer as the rest of the system.
