How to choose loppers

Loppers are long-handled bypass cutters for branches too thick for hand pruners but too small to need a saw. The long handles add leverage and reach into a canopy, and bypass blades leave a clean cut that heals well on living wood.

Handle length sets both reach and power: our loppers run from a compact 19 in. vine lopper up to 31 in. for heavier limbs. Longer handles cut thicker wood with less effort; shorter loppers maneuver better in dense growth. When a branch will not fit the jaws, switch to a pruning saw.
