A catch basin collects surface runoff at a low spot and routes it into your drain line. The box sits below grade with a grate on top; debris settles in the sump while water exits the side outlet. Match the outlet to your pipe size (commonly 3 or 4 in.) and pick a grate rated for the traffic it will see.
Size the basin to the area it drains — larger or fast-flowing areas need a bigger box or several basins tied together. Atrium grates shed leaves in planting beds; flat grates suit lawns and walkways.
